What customs and traditions are seen on Nark Chaturdashi?
The following main customs are associated with Choti Diwali 2025 Narak Chaturdashi:
Morning bath: Before the sun rises, devotees take a bath and apply a mixture of sesame oil and crab leaves to their body. It is believed to get rid of the body of impurities and to help prevent hell.
Yam Tarpan: Devotees offered water for the god of death with sesame seeds, facing South (direction of Yamaraja), in an attempt to get their blessings for longevity and safety from premature death.
Lighting Diyas: To remove darkness and draw money, oil lamps are lit outside the house and close to the main door in the evening after sunset. To ensure health, prosperity and happiness, these lamps are dedicated to the goddess of Yamaraja and Lakshmi, wealth.
Cleanliness and purification: To clean the atmosphere before Diwali, the houses are carefully cleaned. At midnight, unwanted objects are thrown out, which is ready to purify the bad energy and arrive for Lakshmi the next day.
